About this archive
This is a verified archive of how governments, institutions, and mobs have tried to silence specific books, artists, and the people who made them. Every entry is built on a real mechanism — a court case, a fatwa, a customs seizure, a prison sentence, a school board vote, a travel ban, or another documentable act of censorship — and if the evidence is shaky, we say so or leave it out. Iceland has no book entry because no documented case exists there. Two widely repeated stories — about Black Beauty and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland in China — are deliberately excluded from this archive because neither holds up to scrutiny. We would rather tell you a true story you have not heard than a false one you have.
What qualifies as a ban
A documented, enforceable act — court order, state decree, customs seizure, school board vote, or official prohibition. Informal social pressure alone does not qualify.
Verification standard
Every entry links to a primary source: a news report, court record, or official document. If the source is secondary, we note it. If we cannot verify it, it is not here.
Author and artist persecution
Flagged only when the person faced a documented legal consequence — arrest, prosecution, exile, travel ban, or credible death threat — directly traceable to their work.
Still affected today
"Active" means the prohibition or consequence has not been formally reversed as of 2026. Under review does not mean lifted. We update status when reversals are confirmed.
We don't display running totals on this site. The archive grows continuously, and a count would either go stale or become a distraction from the standard we actually care about: every single entry, individually sourced and verified, regardless of how many there are.
